Getting started? Here’s some advice…

Hopefully this will be the start of something that you will continue to do for many years to come. So, don’t rush in and try too much too soon. The safest and most enjoyable way to get started is at a very light pace, and then slowly build up the intensity over time. There will be many opportunities to improve your times, but an injury can set you back along way!

Record all your times. A great benefit of the site is that you can record all your times and distances in one central place – an online logbook if you like! So take advantage of this and record all your times, you’ll probably regret it in years to come if there are times you kept scribbled on a scrap of paper which got lost!

Aim for a goal. One of the best ways to motivate yourself is to set yourself targets. Don’t set unrealistic targets, remember it’s about slow, continual improvement – not huge leaps forwards! Setting targets that are too difficult may just demotivate you. And why not reward yourself for achieving targets – go on, treat yourself – you know you’ve earnt it!

The site allows you to plot future target times, and you’ll be able to see how your are progressing towards this time with our easy to read personal progress charts.

Warm up, cool down and stretch! Stretching can help reduce the risk of injury, as can a warm up and cool down. For more information, see our tips and advice page and also our forum.

Wear suitable clothing and footwear. Don’t just get the cheapest stuff available, it’s essential that your shoes are fit for the use you’ll be putting them through. Seek professional advice when buying your running shoes. And ladies – a proper sports bra can be one of the best investments ever!

Safety first!! – be responsible, especially when running outdoors. Wear highly visible clothing at all times, and take great care if running close to traffic. Try and avoid busy traffic routes wherever possible, and always take the greatest care if crossing roads – always use designated pedestrian crossings.
